Claudication

Claudication is pain produced by insufficient blood supply to muscles during activity. This discomfort usually comes in the legs after walking at a specific pace and for a given period of time — depending on the severity of the condition.

Because the discomfort is not always persistent, the disorder is also known as intermittent claudication. It begins with exercise and finishes with rest. However, if claudication progresses, discomfort may persist even when resting. Claudication is technically a symptom of disease, most often peripheral arterial disease, a narrowing of arteries in the limbs that inhibits blood flow. Treatment focuses on minimising the risk of vascular disease, reducing discomfort, enhancing mobility, and preventing tissue damage.

Symptoms
Claudication is muscle pain caused by a lack of oxygen, which is initiated by exercise and eased by rest. Among the symptoms are the following:

  • Muscle pain, agony, discomfort, or tiredness whenever those muscles are used.

  • Calves, thighs, buttocks, hips, or feet pain.

  • Pain in the shoulders, biceps, and forearms occurs less frequently.

  • Pain that goes away quickly after resting.

The discomfort may worsen over time. You may even have pain while sleeping.

The following are signs or symptoms of advanced peripheral artery disease:

  • Cool skin.

  • Severe, constant pain that progresses to numbness.

  • Skin discoloration.

  • Wounds that don't heal.

When to see a doctor

If you get pain in your legs or arms when exercising, consult your doctor. Claudication can set off a chain reaction that deteriorates cardiovascular health. Activity may become uncomfortable due to pain, and a lack of exercise results in poorer health.

Peripheral artery disease indicates poor cardiovascular health and a higher risk of heart attack and stroke.

Other diseases involving the blood, nerves, and bones might also cause leg and arm pain during exercising. To determine various causes of pain, a thorough assessment and relevant testing are required.
